Video Games

I distinctly & vividly remember getting the Intellivision II for Christmas of 1984(?) while living in Ft. Meade Maryland. My parents had opened it up and had it lined up ready to go. We already had an Atari 2600, so they bought the add-on unit for the Intellivision as well! I loved how square and long the design was compared to the 2600. The Atari reminded me of my Grandmother’s house back in Oklahoma, wood panelling and such, whereas the Intellivision II felt more like something “I” would play in my living.

We moved to Stuttgart Germany next. The Atari and Intellivision came with us. Living in Germany in the 80s, really made the Intellivision II “fit in” with the aesthetics of the design country. Since the Intellivision II also played the Atari games, it already felt like some “other” machine. Now it felt like it was the “Germany” version of the Atari. Even though I had received in the United States, we had also moved there FROM Weisbaden Germany, and my parents are notorious for buying things for future gifts.

While living in Hawaii, I sold my Intellivision II at a base-wide garage sale. I purchased an original Star Wars Tyderium Shuttle and some Nintendo games. I felt it was a good deal at the time. I wish I would have kept it instead. I know I had an Atari in college (1997) but I’m not sure if that was my original or if it was one I had picked up in High School. I owned the brown plastic hard shell Atari case that store the unit, controllers and cables. It reminded me of a typewriter briefcase when it was closed.

Since then, I have mostly been a Nintendo player & consumer. I still have all my original game units, although I never got any GameBoy consoles until the GameBoy Advance. I never owned any SEGA products or any computers of any sort (first computer was obtained in college). I got the Nintendo Entertainment System, with the Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt combo pack, for my 9th or 10th birthday? We were living on Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu, Hawaii. This would have been 1988/9.

I wrote my name on the back of my NES cartridges using paint markers, the same I used on my sk8board griptape, the metal kind with the bearing inside you shake to mix the paint, because we would trade/borrow games with friends, and you needed to make sure you got your game back.
